A Dynamic Model of Demand for Durable Goods that Consume Energy
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper uses a model of durable good purchase and usage to estimate the longrun effect of energy rates on residential energy demand. Whereas previous attempts to estimate energy demand have predominantly taken durable good portfolios as given, this model endogenizes durable good holdings with a model in which households consider the tradeoff between purchase cost and operating cost in deciding whether or not to replace old durable goods. Simulation results from a restricted version of the model are compared to observed replacement behavior in the Residential Energy Consumption Survey. The results from the simulation suggest that for the period 1975-2000 a 50% increase in energy rates would have caused energy demand derived from the usage of central air conditioners, gas water heaters and refrigerators to decrease 8%, 0% and 13%, respectively. 1 Household Durables and Energy Consumption Early studies recognized that residential energy demand depends to a large degree on the characteristics of the energy-consuming durable goods owned by households. This observation led to a distinction between short-run and long-run demand elasticities. In the short-run, households respond to increases 1Department of Economics, University of Wisconsin, Madison, 53706; email: [email protected]

A model of brand competition for durable goods supply chains in a dynamic framework
Game theory is an efficient tool to represent and conceptualize the problems concerning conflict and competition. In recent years and especially for durable products, competition between domestic and foreign brands for gaining market share has received a considerable attention. This paper study electronic commerce concepts by differential game theory and introduce a novel and comprehensive mode...
متن کاملAn Investigation of the Composition of Iran's Import Demand: Capital, Intermediate and Consumer Goods during 1978-2004
The objective of this study has been to develop a typical specification of the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) for Iranâs composition of imports including capital, intermediate and consumer goods. Accordingly, we first test the hypotheses that import demand is homothetic, homogeneous, symmetric, and depends on domestic prices. Then, we estimate the long-run elasticities of the composition o...
متن کاملCompetitive supply of durable goods under stochastic fluctuation in stock
This paper presents a theoretical model in which the stock growth rate of durable goods has stochastic fluctuation over time. It concludes that a social planner increases the expected percentage rate of production since uncertainty increases the user cost from consumer’s point view.
متن کاملResearch Note - The Role of Production Lead Time and Demand Uncertainty in Marketing Durable Goods
F often have to make their production decisions under conditions of demand uncertainty. This is especially true for product categories such as automobiles and technology goods where the lead time needed for manufacturing forces firms to make production decisions well in advance of the selling season. Once the firm has produced the goods, the available production volume affects the firm’s subseq...
متن کاملDurable Goods and Consumption Durable Spending, Relative Prices and Consumption
Real annual consumption growth has averaged about 3.7% between 1998 Q1 and 2003 Q3—well above real average annual GDP growth of about 2.6% during that period. (2) Chart 1 shows that the buoyancy of consumer spending can be entirely accounted for by strong growth in durable and semi-durable goods expenditure (henceforth referred to as 'durable spending' unless otherwise specified). Since 1998 Q1...
